          Introduction:

          Cutting hard rock environments poses significant challenges for construction equipment. Tata Hitachi’s customer faced the daunting task of efficiently profiling basalt rock in a tunneling project. ATE partnered with Tata Hitachi and recommended the Kinshofer drum cutter stepped in with their innovative solution to revolutionize the tunneling process.

          Challenge:

          Surface profiling in Basalt rock, a very hard extrusive igneous rock, is formed due to rapid cooling of magma, presented formidable obstacles to traditional tunneling methods. Blasting could not be used due to the nature of the project and Tata Hitachi needed a solution that could not only cut through the rock efficiently but also maintain precision and accuracy in tunnel profiling. The conventional methods were time-consuming, labor-intensive, and often resulted in uneven surfaces, leading to costly rework.

          Solution:

          Auger Torque provided Tata Hitachi with the KDC 45 Drum Cutter equipped with a specialized profiling drum. Unlike conventional methods that relied on multiple passes and manual adjustments, the Kinshofer Drum Cutter (KDC) 45 offered a groundbreaking solution with its high-powered cutting ability and precise profiling capabilities. The profiling drum ensured consistent and accurate tunnel shaping, reducing the need for additional finishing work.
